Region IV Stroke Education Toolkit


Developed by the Council’s Public Information and Education Resources Committee (PIER) chaired by Alice King, RN, MS, CEN

The Stroke Tool Kit is available for Region IV EMS providers to use for educating various community groups seeking knowledge on stroke awareness and education. The purpose is to educate the target audience on recognizing signs and symptoms of stroke and to act “FAST” – Face, Arm, Speech, Time.

The Stroke Tool Kit is available for community presentations to:

  • Nursing Homes and Rehabilitation Centers
  • Senior Centers
  • Community Groups
  • Adult Day Care
  • Elementary Schools
  • Middle Schools
  • High Schools
  • Assisted Living
  • Community Veterans Groups
  • Other similar groups and organizations

At the conclusion of the program participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize signs and symptoms of stroke
  2. When to call 911

Instructors for this program should be an EMS provider with minimum of EMT with CPR Instructor Certification. This Tool Kit is designed for a thirty (30) minute presentation. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) developed the materials for use by appropriately trained healthcare providers. The course format is: AV Equipment to be arranged by instructor (computer optional, TV or PowerPoint projector, DVD player), facilitator-led group discussion and handouts
